WhatsApp adds voicemail-style voice messages for missed calls. Record and send audio directly from the call screen in the latest beta version.
WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that allows people to leave voice messages immediately after a missed call—adding voicemail-like functionality to the most widely used messaging app on the planet. Now live as part of the Android beta update 2.25.23.21, this release introduces a new option on the call screen: “Record Voice Message.” Rather than having to jump back into chat mode and send a voice note by hand, users can now record and send an attached message to the missed call immediately, speeding up follow-up and keeping it more relevant.
Communication with One-Tap Voice Messaging
The new voicemail facility is aimed at making communication more efficient, particularly in situations where tone or urgency is critical. Following a missed call, users can simply press “Record Voice Message” to send a brief audio message that shows up in the chat stream next to the missed call alert. This means no typing or switching away from the call screen, making it suitable for both business and social conversations. The feature is likely to make the calling experience on WhatsApp more like that of a traditional phone system while maintaining the app’s characteristic simplicity.
Beta Rollout and What to Look for Next
At present, the voicemail-like feature is available only to beta testers on Android, but a wider release is coming in the weeks ahead. Those who would like early access can sign up for the WhatsApp Beta program through the Google Play Store. As Meta works on improving WhatsApp’s voice and video features continuously, this update indicates a move toward more expressive and natural communication. Look out for additional updates as WhatsApp develops into a full-fledged calling platform.
