Apple’s iOS 18.2 lets users set WhatsApp as default App for calls and texts, simplifying communication and offering customization options

For years, iPhone owners have wished for the freedom to change their default apps, particularly calls and messaging. Well, those days are now behind us! Apple’s latest iOS changes have brought with them a whole new level of flexibility, and now you can use WhatsApp as your default communication hub. Let’s explore what this entails and how you can use this revolutionary feature.

The Old Guard vs. the New Wave:

Apple’s walled garden strategy for so long kept users pretty much stuck with the native Phone and Messages apps. Although these are solid, many depend on WhatsApp for its cross-platform support, feature richness, and worldwide popularity. The annoyance of having to switch apps repeatedly for communication was a universal complaint.

Now, with iOS 18.2 (or above!), Apple has thrown open the gates, offering users the freedom to choose.

What Does This Mean for You?

Seamless Communication: Pressing on phone numbers or message links will now directly open WhatsApp, making your communication seamless.

Convenience at Your Fingertips: If WhatsApp is your go-to communication app, this change does away with the incessant app-hopping, saving you precious time and effort.

International Connectivity: For people who have foreign contacts, this makes integration of WhatsApp that much more effortless.

Note: Even though outgoing calls can be made via WhatsApp, incoming regular phone calls will still be received via the Apple phone application.

How to Make WhatsApp the Default App Setting

Making WhatsApp your default is unexpectedly easy:

1. Update, Update, Update!: Make sure your iPhone is running iOS 18.2 or a newer version. Also, ensure your WhatsApp app is updated to the current version on the App Store.

2. Go to Settings: Go to the “Settings” app in your iPhone.

3. Locate the Apps Section: Scroll down and tap on Apps, then choose Default Apps.

4. Select Your Defaults: In the “Default Apps” settings, you’ll find settings for Calling and Messaging. Tap on both and choose WhatsApp.

Following these steps will make your iPhone use WhatsApp as default App for calls and messages automatically whenever you press a contact’s number or message button.

This feature not only makes life easier but also shows Apple’s focus on user control and customization. First released to meet requirements in the European Union, the feature is now rolling out everywhere, making things convenient for people across the board.

You may be a fan of WhatsApp or just like fewer hang-ups in general, but this new feature is a doozy. It shows how technology continues to make advances, prioritizing the needs of the user.

The Impact and the Future

This move represents a drastic change in Apple’s strategy, acknowledging the increasing need for user customization. It gives users the power to customize their iPhone to fit their individual needs and desires.

This addition is a big victory for WhatsApp users on the iPhone. It’s an indication that companies are paying attention to the users. It will be interesting to see what other default apps they will include in the future.
