Microsoft shuts its Movies & TV store on Xbox and Windows, halting new rentals and purchases; existing content remains playable for now.

After close to two decades of experimentation with digital entertainment, Microsoft has finally closed its Movies & TV store on Xbox and Windows devices. From July 18, 2025, customers can no longer buy or rent new movies or TV series from the Microsoft Store—a subtle but significant turn in the direction of the company.

A Long Goodbye to Digital Media Sales

This isn’t simply a feature sunset but rather the end of an era. Microsoft’s evolution of video content started with the Zune Marketplace in 2006, transformed into Xbox Video, and more recently became the Movies & TV app. For years, it provided a simple method for buying or renting entertainment right on your console or PC. With streaming giants such as Netflix, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime Video ruling the space, however, Microsoft is passing the torch.

What’s Changing?

• No new rentals or purchases are permitted on Xbox or Windows.

• Existing content purchased prior to is still available through the Movies & TV app.

• Refunds and transfers to other platforms are not being provided.

• Eligible American movie titles can be linked to Movies Anywhere by U.S. users, but TV shows cannot.

What You Can Still Do?

If you’ve amassed a collection of content in Microsoft, relax—your purchases aren’t going away. You can continue to stream or download them at HD resolution in the Movies & TV app. Microsoft promised to maintain the servers “for many years,” although no one can guarantee how long that will be.

Why It Matters?

This action underscores a larger reality of digital ownership: it’s more tenuous than we imagine. When a platform falls out of business, your content may become trapped in a walled garden. Microsoft’s action serves as a reminder that subscription streaming models have supplanted pay-per-title options, and technology firms are turning toward cloud services, AI, and gaming.

So, if you’re a longtime Xbox or Windows user with a movie collection tucked away in the cloud, now’s a good time to download your favorites, explore Movies Anywhere, and consider shifting to platforms that are built for the streaming age.
