WhatsApp is testing emoji reactions to calls on Android, letting users respond with any emoji during voice or video chats, not just the default six.

WhatsApp is quietly working on a feature that could make your voice and video calls a lot more expressive and a lot more fun. If you’ve ever wanted to react during a call with something more than a thumbs-up or heart, you’re in luck.

What’s Changing?

In its latest Android beta (version 2.25.20.15), WhatsApp is testing a new call reaction feature that lets users respond during calls using any emoji, not just the usual six.

Until now, reactions during calls were limited to a small set of default emojis like 👍❤️😂😮😢🙏. But with this update, WhatsApp is opening the door to the full emoji keyboard. That means you can now react with a pizza slice 🍕, a fire emoji 🔥, or something else.

How It Works?

When you’re on a voice or video call, you can tap a reaction icon and select any emoji that’s on your keyboard. The emoji will show up for a second or two on screen, so you can react without cutting off the speaker or disrupting the conversation flow.

It’s a discreet but effective way to express emotion, agreement, surprise, or even a bit of personality—all without having to say a word.

Still in Testing

Currently, the feature is live only for some beta testers on Android. If you are in the WhatsApp beta program, you may already be seeing it in action. For the rest of you, it’s likely to roll out more broadly over the next few weeks.

Why This Matters

This update might seem small, but it’s part of a larger trend: making digital communication more human. Emoji reactions are already a staple in messages, stories, and social media—so it makes sense to bring that same flexibility to calls.

Whether you’re laughing at a friend’s joke, cheering on a teammate, or just vibing during a group call, having the freedom to react with any emoji adds a layer of emotional nuance that words alone sometimes miss.

Final Thoughts

WhatsApp is increasingly developing from a mere messaging app into a full-fledged communication platform. With add-ons such as multi-device support, HD media sharing, and now customizable call reactions, it’s apparent the app is directed towards allowing conversations to feel more natural and expressive.
